Nosferatu: A Performance and History of The Antisemite’s Jew proposes that the vampire Nosferatu is a performance of antisemitic fantasy. Researching Vampire and Plague Histories in correlation with historical and modern European Antisemitism, the essay identifies Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) as a performative foreshadowing of continuous dehumanization. Replicating the belief system of the author rather than the Jewish people themselves, Gale utilizes performance critical theory and race theory to extricate the racist history that informs Gothic Vampires.
